A report, which is produced annually by Open Doors USA, found that persecution of Christians rose globally for the third year in a row, reaching “unprecedented levels” and has identified 2016 as the “worst year yet” since the organization began monitoring persecution 25 years ago.
“Christians throughout the world continue to risk imprisonment, loss of home and assets, torture, beheadings, rape, and death as a result of their faith,” the report stated.
The report corroborated an earlier study from the Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR), which found that during 2016, some 90,000 Christians around the world, were killed for their faith.
The director of CESNUR and leader of the study reported that Christians are “the most persecuted religious group in the world.”
“Islamic oppression remains the most common cause of pressure against Christians,” the report states, “and it is rising most sharply in Africa, where more people are killed for their Christian faith than anywhere else in the world.”
For the 14th straight year, North Korea tops the list as the most dangerous place to be a Christian, followed by Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and Eritrea.
Pressures faced by Christians are examined in five spheres of life (private, family, community, national, and church).
How do you deal with persecution for your faith? Do you pray for those who mock or wrong you? Do you operate in faith as you thank and praise God for the opportunity to gain heavenly rewards? Or instead, do you respond in bitterness, grumble, seek revenge or practice unhealthy behaviors (like smoking or drinking) to escape the hurt?
BLESSED!
Important Scriptures:
Matthew 5:10-12
10 BLESSED are they which are PERSECUTED for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 BLESSED are ye, when men shall revile you, and PERSECUTE you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 REJOICE, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so PERSECUTED they the prophets which were before you.
Luke 6:22,23
22 BLESSED are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
23 REJOICE ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
1 Peter 3:14
But and if ye SUFFER for righteousness' sake, HAPPY are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;
